When picking out your very first hoop it is important to choose the right size and material. As a general rule, the bigger and heavier the hoop, the slower it moves and therefore easier to keep up. That is why Éire Hoops makes all beginner hoops in MDPE or HDPE material which is the heaviest tubing type and sizes range from 38 to 40 inches which is on the larger scale that hoops come in.
The hoop when standing vertically on the ground should reach approximately to your belly button or the top of your hip bone. If you have a larger body size you should be looking at a bigger hoop and if you are a smaller body size you should be looking at a smaller hoop.
As the beginner hoop is heavy in weight, it is recommended for mostly 'on body' hula hooping. As you begin to progress you will find yourself transitioning to a smaller diameter hoop in a lighter material like Polypro. If you attempt too much 'off body' with your beginners hoop you may find you end up bruising/hurting your hands.
Your first beginner hoop is usually very sentimental and you go back to it time and time again when you start learning a new trick. Because they are made from MDPE/HDPE they are more robust than Polypro and last for a long time.
If you are unsure which hoop to pick for your first, please feel free to get in touch with me and I'll be happy to help!
Hi Susie,
Many thanks for your question! I think a 36’’ or 38’’ would both suit. If you would be interested in an in-between size of 37’’ MDPE beginner hoop I can certainly do that for you :)
